OUR HISTORY

Our Beginnings

According to historical records the Methodist Society was formed in Hillsdale in 1808, although meetings had been held years before. In 1811 Mr. Foster donated land upon which a small frame church was built, known as the “Foster Meeting House” where services were held until 1845.

In 1845 our present structure was erected on property given by Seymour Foster, Parla Foster’s son. Since the erection of our present building many changes have been made over the years.  Old stoves and coal-burning furnaces were replaced, old fashioned plain glass and shutters windows were replaced by stained glass windows. A small foot-pedaled organ was replaced with a Wurlitzer, and crimson cushions and carpeting and a white pulpit enhance the beauty and tranquility of the sanctuary.

Our Current State

The Hillsdale church has been a vital part of the community over the years, providing not only Sunday morning worship services but a Sunday school program, prayer groups, weddings, baptisms, and celebration of life services.  It is where the Roe Jan Food Pantry is located, and where different groups meet.

In September 14th 2008 the church held its two hundredth anniversary. It was a beautiful day to celebrate with our Pastor Juanita Middlebrook our District Superintendent James Moore,  Bishop Parks and many others.

Many wonderful dedicated members have worked, prayed, laughed and cried within these wall.  We give a profound thanks to all of those who have given so much of themselves over the years to make this church what it is today.
